Alloy Development

Innovative alloys for investment casting, additive manufacturing, and hybrid processes

Our precise knowledge of the mechanical, thermal, physical, and chemical properties of precious metals is key to our development of new materials. Using modern metallurgy, high-throughput methods, and thermodynamic calculations, we pursue our goal of creating extraordinary innovations in precious metals.
Metallic glasses

Bulk metallic glasses based on platinum for outstanding material properties

Bulk metallic glasses (BMG) are alloys with fascinating properties: They are strong and hard, but what truly sets this material apart is the unique combination of high strength and very high elasticity which offers new design opportunities. A production process developed at fem, in collaboration with our partners, enables these special alloys to be processed on conventional manufacturing equipment.
A LOOK INSIDE FEM

From idea to innovation

Our interdisciplinary teams work together on exciting precious metal innovations. With state-of-the-art technology, more than 100 years of experience, and a great deal of passion.

ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING

Unique designs and innovative process engineering

At fem, for example, 950 Pt alloys are manufactured in unprecedented geometries using the laser powder bed fusion method (LPBF). We cast customized alloys, produce and optimize precious metal powders, and conduct detailed research into the LPBF process.
COLORS

Everyone loves colors: colored precious metals with seductive hues.

With the methods we use here at fem, we aim to discover new colors for precious metals. The high-troughput methods, which we have already used successfully in other areas, are particularly suitable for this purpose. Diffusion experiments and PVD co-sputtering are interesting processes for this purpose. However, in order to cover more than just basic research, we at fem cover the entire process chain through to near-industrial production in order to provide our customers with the best possible support.
HYBRID PROCESSES

Material innovations through hybrid processes

The combination of different processes such as precision casting, additive manufacturing, and hot pressing opens up completely new possibilities for the luxury industry in terms of design and material combinations.

DIGITALIZATION

Digitalization in materials science: Towards a Digital Twin

By digitally representing complex materials and processes, we aim to achieve a huge increase in efficiency. Our R&D work generates vast amounts of measurement and metadata, which we integrate into a so-called digital twin. With the help of in-depth data analysis, we can take simulation to a new level and refine real manufacturing processes.
