Clean cathode air for maximum service life of PEM fuel cell systems

The project enables the knowledge-based design of cathode air filters for applications in China and is complemented by a parallel application to the Chinese MoST (Ministry of Science and Technology) funding call for bilateral research projects in the field of fuel cells. Partners on the Chinese side are Tongji University, Shanghai, MANN+HUMMEL China, and Weichai as an OEM partner for testing.

Electrochemistry makes it possible: Using valuable CO₂ intelligently thanks to direct electrolysis.

In this project, electrochemically deposited bismuth was classified as a suitable catalyst for CO₂-H₂O co-electrolysis. A correlation of the selectivity for formate with the layer morphology or with the deposition parameters was established. The combination of self-produced gas diffusion electrodes electrochemically coated with bismuth is promising for the development of an electrode with good long-term stability for direct electrolysis.
