Determination of breakdown voltage and withstand voltage

AT A GLANCE

To test the electrical insulation capability of materials, we carry out breakdown voltage measurements e.g. in accordance with DIN EN ISO 2376. These tests are particularly suitable for flat surfaces, while measurements near edges or at sharp-edged transitions are not permitted. As the test is carried out until a spark breakdown, the measurement can affect the surface. In a modified form with “wet” contacting, the finest cracks in insulating layers can be reliably detected.

AREAS OF APPLICATION

  • Testing of insulation layers on components such as coils, transformers, magnets and generators
  • Evaluation of oxide layers on anodized aluminium, magnesium and other materials
  • Inspection of paint layers with regard to layer thickness and freedom from defects
  • Testing electrical insulating films
