At The Jewelry Symposium, craftsmanship meets visionary material innovation.

On one of the most prestigious international platforms for materials, design, and technology in the jewelry industry, Florian Bulling presented a groundbreaking development in modern materials science for jewelry designed to endure for generations. Together with a team led by Lisa-Yvonn Schmitt, he is advancing the development of platinum-based Bulk Metallic Glasses (BMGs).

This remarkable class of materials is opening an entirely new chapter in jewelry design.

Based on platinum, these alloys challenge the conventions of traditional metallurgy. What once required extremely rapid cooling in metallic molds can now, thanks to newly developed alloy compositions, also be achieved through investment casting: the formation of an amorphous, non-crystalline structure.

The result is a material that combines the strength of steel, the elasticity of polymers, and a surface highly resistant to scratches, corrosion, and the effects of time.

For the world of fine jewelry, this represents far more than a technical innovation—it unlocks a new level of creative freedom.

A new design language emerges: fluid, precise, and uncompromisingly modern. Delicate structures, intricate geometries, and exceptional durability converge in an aesthetic that was previously beyond reach.

Through precision investment casting, these “glassy metals” can be transformed into highly intricate jewelry pieces with outstanding dimensional accuracy and surface quality. Key manufacturing challenges—including crystallization, oxidation, and shrinkage—are carefully controlled through advanced process engineering, ensuring exceptional results without compromising quality or finish.

A vision that resonated strongly with the international audience and sparked lively discussions throughout the symposium.

Many thanks to the organizers and to Jessa Cast for an inspiring and successful event.
