fem at CALPHAD 2024: Development of new Nb-Ni-Ta based active brazing alloys

Last week Lisa-Yvonn Schmitt had the great pleasure to attend the CALPHAD LI International Conference on Computer Coupling of Phase Diagrams and Thermochemistry in Mannheim/Germany. She presented the work, which was done at fem Forschungsinstitut together with her colleagues Frank König and Dr. Ulrich E. Klotz, on the Nb-Ni-Ta liquidus projection using the CALPHAD approach. This study is related to the collaborative research project LotLeg on the development of new Nb-Ni-Ta based active brazing alloys, which was carried out in cooperation with the industrial user committee and our research partner Fraunhofer IKTS.

Active brazing allows direct wetting of the components to be joined and makes the process a more cost effective one step process. The use of Nb-Ni-Ta alloys allows the application at higher temperatures, as required for turbine repair or heat resistant components, while providing high oxidation and corrosion resistance. CALPHAD-based calculations led to the identification of promising candidate alloys, which were then investigated experimentally. Subsequent high-throughput calculations enabled the alloy compositions to be optimised for improved properties.
